Lafayette Regional Airport had a
banner year in 2007. The airport saw its busiest year ever in terms
of passengers and cargo, new construction was completed on hangars
and a fire station, security measures were improved and terminal
improvements made flying Lafayette more convenient than ever before
for passengers.
Lafayette Regional Airport is a valuable economic
development asset, service provider and resource, which not only
provides an annual economic impact in excess of $450,000,000 to the
community, but also is often the “front door” to Acadiana. As such,
Lafayette Airport Commission, in its role to provide governance of
Lafayette Regional Airport, is committed to provide, “... a safe,
secure and customer-friendly environment...” and to preserve,
improve and expand this valuable $70,000,000+ asset. This has never
been more important, or more noticeable, than in the year that just
ended.
In the area of safety, highly experienced Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) personnel conducted an annual safety
compliance inspection, which evaluates every aspect of airport
operations, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) and maintenance.
That inspection resulted in no comment other than positive comments
about Lafayette Regional Airport going above and beyond what is
required. Safety enhancements that visitors will notice include a
new ARFF station and fire truck. What most will not notice, but are
very important to greater safety, include runway safety area
additions, enhanced fueling procedures, improved airfield electrical
and signage, modifications to the terminal/cargo ramp and Taxiway
Bravo and strict compliance to FAA operational standards.
Security improvements, by their nature, are also
often less visible, but no less important and include security
control room modernization and continued close cooperation with
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials not only to
meet federal requirements, but to provide a safe and secure
environment for families, friends and neighbors. Improvements to
customer service range from the most visible, such as new checked
baggage screening equipment, a modernized restaurant facility, a
business center, an economy parking lot and a flight information
display system, to less noticeable projects such as improvements to
taxiways, runways and ramps to improve and expedite the travel
experience. Airport commission and staff work every day to find ways
to preserve, improve and expand operations at Lafayette Regional
Airport. From service contracts for air conditioning to visits with
airlines, they always have the best interests of the flying public
and area businesses in mind.
Lafayette Airport Commission works under a committee
structure to streamline the work of the commission. A brief
description of each committee follows with highlights of that
committee’s 2007 accomplishments, including those issues that cross
over from committee to committee.
